Checking if Text Messages are Being Marked Spam

Sometimes text messages get flagged as spam and moved to a separate folder. Here’s how you can check if this is happening.

✅ For Android Users

⚠️ Note: Steps may vary slightly depending on your phone model and messaging app (Google Messages, Samsung Messages, etc.).

Google Messages (most common):

  1. Open the Messages app.
  2. Tap the ☰ Menu (three lines) or profile icon in the top corner.
  3. Look for Spam & Blocked (sometimes just “Spam”).
  4. Tap it to review messages that were filtered as spam.
  5. If you find a legitimate message, open it → tap the ⋮ More menu → select Not spam.

Samsung Messages:

  1. Open the Messages app.
  2. Tap the ⋮ More options menu (three dots) in the upper right.
  3. Select Spam and blocked.
  4. Review any messages in this folder.
  5. Mark any messages that shouldn’t be spam as Not spam or move them back to your inbox.

✅ For iPhone Users

⚠️ iPhones don’t have a traditional “Spam folder.” Instead, they separate unknown or suspicious senders into a different list.

Check Message Filters:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap Messages.
  3. Tap Unknown & Spam.
    • Make sure filtering is turned on if you want organization, but note that legitimate texts may end up in the “Unknown Senders” tab.

Review Messages:

  1. Open the Messages app.
  2. At the top left, tap Filters (only appears if filtering is enabled).
  3. Select Unknown Senders to see texts from numbers not in your contacts.
  4. Check if any legitimate texts are here.
  5. To stop filtering altogether, return to Settings → Messages → Unknown & Spam and toggle off.

🛠 Tips for Both Android & iPhone

  • Add trusted senders to your contacts to prevent future filtering.
  • You can also send a message to the number in question to remove it from you spam folder.
